The Project

We were proud to be asked to create a lyric video and visualiser for the Rico Nasty ‘Magic’ Remix ft BARKAA and Madam3Empress. ‘Blak Girl Magic’ was the theme and inspiration for this video, featuring the Matriarch, the Dreamtime Serpent, the Baaka (River in the Barkindji language) and the Dark Emu in the Milky Way.

The DMV’s one and only Punk Rock Princess, Rico Nasty  shares the official remix of “Magic” featuring Southern Hemispherical soulmates BARKAA and MADAM3EMPRESS.

Originally released in July to wide media acclaim, Rico’s “Magic” heralded a new era of Rico, acting as a bridge for her fans and asserts that though Rico is unwilling to be held to one singular genre, she is a master of all of them. The darker feel of the song is intentional. Through the song and creative, Rico hopes to evoke the power of love and relationships “to bring out another side of you and almost feel like you’re being taken over by Magic.”

That power of love and relationships now takes on a new hold with the release of Rico’s groundbreaking collaboration with BARKAA and MADAM3EMPRESS for the official remix of “Magic”. The highly anticipated remix comes alongside a lyric video by renowned First Nations creative agency INCOMMON, led by Creative Director Sofii Mara who says 'in Wiradjuri we have a word 'yindyamarra' which best translates to show respect, but more than that; it means to do so kindly, gently and thoughtfully. That is what I wanted to do with this project; to show the proper respect to two of the goats, to celebrate our shared commonalities as well as my own culture.'

BARKAA is a Malyangapa, Barkindji woman from Western New South Wales, now living in South West Sydney on Gandangara land. Music to BARKAA has been part of her journey to express herself, the truth and issues impacting First Nations people. BARKAA's track "OUR LIVES MATTER" and her collaboration with brother DOBBY "I CAN'T BREATHE" highlighting Black Deaths In Custody, remain the unofficial anthems of Australia’s Bla(c)k Lives Matter protests.

Of the remix, BARKAA says: “It was such a mad opportunity to be able to jump on the remix of “Magic” alongside MADAM3EMPRESS and to be able to show a softer side to myself, it took me out of my comfort zone and made me think outside the box which was an experience for me as an artist. I’m honoured to be on Rico Nasty’s remix, it’s so surreal for me as an up-and-coming artist here to be able to be on such a huge track with an absolute gun in the music industry. It’s been huge watching Rico’s uprising and it’s beautiful for me as a woman of colour to be able to be on such a massive remix. It feels pretty historical.”

She is joined by Sydney singer on Gadigal land and rising player in our (or ‘the local’) Soul-RnB scene MADAM3EMPRESS, who adds: “It is an honour to be a part of something so monumental in Australian music history… to have a First Nations woman tell her story and completely and utterly body her verse on a new track from one of the most exciting artists coming out of the states right now is something I am so honoured to be in the mix of. Big ups to Rico Nasty for allowing us to be a part of this. To have a Black African woman (myself), and a First Nations woman (BARKAA) appear together on a track like Magic is such a big statement. I hope it will help the world to see we have an important culture here - one of colour, one of power and one of womanhood.”
